Crane Strategies, LLC is a government relations firm that specializes in assisting clients navigate the federal budget and appropriations process. The firm takes an innovative approach to help clients solve problems and create opportunities.

Steve Crane opened Crane Strategies after serving for more than twenty years in various positions in government and the private sector. Most recently, he served for seven years as a staff member of the House Committee on Appropriations. During his tenure with the Committee he served six years as both majority and minority clerk of the Subcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Services, Education and Related Agencies – the largest and perhaps most politically contentious appropriations bill considered by the Congress. During this time he developed extensive expertise in health, education and labor programs, with a particular emphasis on the Department of Health and Human Services. In 2011 he successfully assisted in shepherding two appropriations bills into law, covering fiscal years 2011 and 2012.

Prior to his promotion to head the Labor, Health and Human Services, Education and Related Agencies Subcommittee he served on the Subcommittee on Transportation, Treasury, Housing and Urban Development, the Judiciary, District of Columbia and Independent Agencies. In this capacity, Crane was responsible for making funding recommendations for several agencies, including the Federal Railroad Administration, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the Internal Revenue Service, the Federal Judiciary and the Surface Transportation Board.

Crane also has a background in natural resources issues, handling appropriations for the former Minerals Management Service (currently known as the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, Regulation and Enforcement) and the Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement at the Department of the Interior. In addition to this Appropriations Committee experience, Crane was employed in the Government Relations Office of Newmont Gold Company, the largest American gold mining company with operations in Nevada and worldwide. Among his experience was work on mining law reform, Superfund reauthorization, and myriad environmental regulations.

Among his private sector experience, Crane spent ten years in government relations, representing corporate clients, several universities (both public and private), public health organizations, non-profit entities and trade associations. His work included advising clients on agriculture, science and technology, public health, information technology, education and defense issues.

Before his time in the private sector, Crane worked on the staff of U.S. Senator Barbara Mikulski. Among his assignments was work on the former Appropriations Subcommittee on Veterans Affairs, Housing and Urban Development and Independent Agencies. In this capacity he worked on the budgets of the Departments of Veterans Affairs and Housing and Urban Development as well as the National Science Foundation, the Environmental Protection Agency, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration and the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

Crane, a native of Connecticut, is a 1992 graduate of the George Washington University with a B.A. in History. He currently resides in Virginia with his wife and twin daughters.
